[00:15.96]Michael Flynn is the first official from President Donald Trump's administration [00:22.96]to plead guilty in an investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. [00:31.36]The special counsel is examining possible ties [00:35.68]between Russia and the Trump presidential campaign in 2016. [00:43.56]Flynn admitted to lying about his contacts [00:48.04]with Russian ambassador to the United States, [00:52.28]Sergey Kislyak, before Trump's inauguration. [00:58.44]Court papers make clear that Flynn [01:02.14]knows the identities of members of Trump's transition team [01:07.52]that had detailed knowledge of his outreach to Russia. [01:13.56]U.S. District Court Judge Rudolph Contreras [01:17.92]said Flynn is cooperating with the investigation. [01:23.60]The judge added that the government will decide [01:27.28]how effectively Flynn is cooperating as part of a plea agreement. [01:35.12]In a statement, Flynn said, "My guilty plea and agreement to cooperate [01:42.52]with the Special Counsel's Office reflect a decision I made [01:47.80]in the best interests of my family and of our country." [01:54.96]Trump did not respond to shouted questions from reporters Friday [02:01.52]as he welcomed Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al Sarraj to the White House. [02:09.72]White House lawyer Ty Cobb said, "Nothing about the guilty plea [02:15.96]or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn." [02:22.16]Cobb noted that Flynn only worked in the White House for 25 days. [02:30.08]Flynn was an early Trump campaign supporter. [02:34.48]And the president had previously referred to Flynn as a "wonderful man." [02:42.52]Flynn was forced to resign in February. [02:46.60]White House officials said he had misled them [02:50.84]about the meeting with the Russian ambassador. [02:55.44]Former FBI Director James Comey was leading an investigation [03:01.20]into possible ties between Russia and the Trump campaign. [03:06.40]After his dismissal in May, Comey testified before Congress [03:12.40]that Trump told him that he "hoped" he would cancel an investigation [03:18.84]into Flynn's possible connections to Russian officials. [03:24.68]But the White House has denied that was the case. [03:30.16]Comey's dismissal led to the appointment of Mueller as special counsel. [03:37.36]In October, the grand jury indicted Paul Manafort, [03:42.68]who served as Trump's campaign chairman [03:45.92]and Rick Gates, also a top campaign official. [03:51.52]George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser for the campaign, [03:57.24]also admitted to lying about his contacts with Russian nationals. [04:04.52]I'm Caty Weaver.
